2024 in Review: The Collective Effort Behind ECO

January 15, 2025

ECO Georgia has experienced a transformative year, marked by significant achievements in advocating for sustainable oyster farming, community engagement, and coastal ecosystem preservation. As the organization reflects on its milestones, it also looks forward to expanding its impact in 2025.

Program Highlights

In 2024, ECO Georgia launched several initiatives aimed at educating and involving the community in coastal conservation:

  • Educational Partnerships: Collaborations with local schools, such as Tybee Island Maritime Academy (TIMA) and Saint Andrew’s School, provided students with hands-on learning experiences. Activities included water quality testing, studying oyster adaptations, and understanding aquaculture's role in coastal preservation.
  • Field Trips: The inaugural field trip with TIMA allowed 50 third graders to explore a floating oyster farm and engage directly with marine ecosystems, fostering a deeper connection to their coastal environment.
  • Professional Development: Training sessions for 50 educators, organized in partnership with the Georgia Association of Marine Educators (GAME) and the Georgia Aquarium, focused on integrating oyster-related content into STEAM curricula, enhancing environmental education across the region.
  • Outreach: Participating in local school’s STEAM nights where ECO was able to engage with 300 students and their parents on sustainable oyster farming and the many benefits oysters bring to the environment.

Community Engagement

The success of these programs was bolstered by strong community support:

  • Georgia Oyster Revival: This inaugural fundraising event united local chefs and businesses, resulting in a sold-out gathering that raised $12,000. The event not only provided financial support but also strengthened community bonds and awareness of ECO Georgia's mission.

Looking Ahead to 2025

Building on the momentum of 2024, ECO Georgia plans to:

  • Expand Educational Outreach: By forming new partnerships with additional schools and educational institutions, the organization aims to reach more students and educators, promoting a broader understanding of coastal conservation.
  • Enhance Community Programs: ECO Georgia intends to develop new community-based initiatives that encourage active participation in environmental stewardship, including volunteer opportunities and public workshops.
  • Strengthen Conservation Efforts: Focused on protecting and restoring oyster populations, the organization will implement projects that directly contribute to the health of Georgia's coastal ecosystems.

The achievements of 2024 were made possible by the dedication of educators, students, community members, and partners. As ECO Georgia looks to 2025, it remains committed to its mission of fostering sustainable practices and preserving the natural heritage of Georgia's coastline.
